Called the “Attila of the straight line,†Baron Haussmann transformed Paris from a squalid encampment of shacks and dank dark winding alleys to a city of broad boulevards and charming apartment blocks. “The City of Light†by Rupert Christiansen is a short, concise history of Louis Napoleon’s Second Empire and Haussmann’s extraordinary public service contributions and urban vision which will illuminate and enlighten the reader. Christiansen synthesizes well, grabbing small disparate facts and observations ( “a stroll along the Boulevard Saint Michel can still demonstrate, richly nuanced differentiation in the shape of porticos, the ornament of their lintels and pediments, the modeling of pillars and caryatids ...â€) and using them to capture major themes. His footnotes add to the story line. He includes a few antiquated photos which are informative.
Having been to Paris numerous times I was fascinated to learn that not so long ago it looked almost nothing like it does today. Reading this book was a very entertaining way to explore those changes along with a dose of French history and politics thrown in. It can be slow reading at times and could have benefited from more illustrations and photos, especially a "than and now" section.Nevertheless I liked it enough to buy a 2nd copy as a gift for a friend.
If you love and know Paris this is a great read.
If he was trying to write a history, he should have done some original research and brought some fresh point to the table.
Brief, but fact- and anecdote-filled history. Great for a novice or Francophile.
Comprehensive
A surprisingly short and quick read, "City of Light" explores the development of the city of Paris under Louis Napoleon. From about 1850-1870 the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France and made the modernization and improvement of the infrastructure of the city of Paris his main focus. Headed by Georges-Eugene Haussmann, ruthless rebuilding and renovation moved thousands of poor Parisians out of their homes to make room for large, straight roads, new apartments, shops, etc. Haussmann improved the quality of running water in Paris, lessened traffic congestion, and emptied marshes that caused could air and epidemics among the citizens."City of Light" is a fast read, with a surprising number of gorgeous photographs of the changing city of Paris. Although occasionally the writing wanders a little, and I would have appreciated a bit more depth to more of the book, it was a nice read that history lovers, architects, and those who love Paris will enjoy.
City of Light: The Making of Modern Paris by Rupert Christiansen is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early October. It is about how the construction of Charles Garnier/Louis Napoleon’s (Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew) Opera house and Basilica de Sacre Coeur contributed to Paris’ cultural and wartime history during the late 19th century. All told, there was a massive amount of city planning to widen and create new roads, fight disease, build higher-rise apartment buildings, rehousing the Les Halles market, reducing the plight of homeless people living on or among building sites near city workers, encouraging new recreational activities, more and bigger parks, and dampen crime. There was also ample, but mismanaged funding (typically for materials on order or toward artisan class to liven the economy), the upcoming French war in 1870 against Prussia, and Christiansen's extremely quick fast-forward and tie-in into World War I & the present day.
