It took me 56 years to finally learn the real story of what happened to the men who worked, fought, and lost their freedom while on Wake Island in 1941. My father was one of those men. Over the years, my father was extremely hesitant to talk of the years he spent in Japanese POW camps. A short antecdotal story here or there, or passing comment was all we could hope for of what he experienced. So I grew up knowing he was there, but never really much about what happened to him while a POW. Now that I have read this book, my eyes are open and they are seeing a father in a completely new way. He has always been my hero and my role model. But that has all been magnified many times over now that I know the life he had to live and how incredible it is that I am even alive due to his survival of this incredible, harrowing experience. This book shocked and amazed me many times in telling of the brutality and inhumanity experienced by the soldiers and civilians who were captured on Wake Island. But when I placed my father in the holds of ships with little or no food and no room to lie down ... or in POW camps with their freezing temps and impossible living conditions ... the years of disease and starvation ... and the savage brutality of their captors ... this book brought me to tears more than once.OK, so this means something really personal to me, because my father was there. But this is also an incredible read... well written ... meticulously researched. Merely for its historical significance, this book is worth the read.I so admire the men who went to hell and survived to come back home again. And I admire this author for taking the time and effort that was required to tell this story to the world. Thank you!!!
This was a great book to read describing the battles and POW years after Wake Island. My great uncle was one of the civilian workers captured on Wake and I was 10 years old when he returned. I can remember him screaming during the nights and his carpenter skills allowed him to make a living during difficult times. Urwin allows his readers to follow a large group of military men plus the civilians from the arrival of the Japanese on Wake Island until their release. The courage that was displayed when the first attack occurred and the Japanese were forced to retreat demonstrated an inner strength that the men may not have known they possessed. These men awoke on Dec. 8th to start work when the news of Pearl Harbor became reality and Japanese planes attacked the island with very little preparation. The vivid description of the trip on the Nitta Maru is hard to read along with many of the beatings and hunger to follow at Woosung Camp. In previous readings, I do not recall reading a more vivid picture of what the men endured on the Nitta Maru. This book will allow you to know how some of the men survived as a POW and the role that Edouard Egle, of the Red Cross, played to help them survive. He was very courageous. This author will take you through the prisoners journey to different POW camps and describes the differences at each camp as to what the men experienced. I liked the maps as I continually refer to these pages to follow the movements until the end of the war. Very little is mentioned regarding the 98 men who were murdered by the Japanese and the monument to the men. I highly recommend this book.Gary
I could not say it any better than the previous reviewers. They said it all. "Victory in Defeat" is the companion work to "Facing Fearful Odds." The latter book is about the defense of Wake Island, and the former is about how these defenders survived the trauma, isolation, and brutality of being prisoners of war. Gregory Urwin did a masterful job to complete the whole history about this epic battle and the epic survival of the determined Army, Navy, Marine, and civilian survivors. I'm the great nephew of Retired Admiral Winfield Scott Cunningham and have been collecting documents and histories for over 25 years of these heroic men. I have also been writing about the events to honor my uncle and all the men and civilians that fought under his leadership, and to keep their memories alive. In my opinion, Gregory Urwin, deserves to be called a hero himself. His heroic efforts to write these wonderful history's, to keep their collected memories alive and well, is in deed a heroic action in it's self.
My wife's uncle served on Wake Island and was captured. He never talked about his experiences, and died in the late 40's. This book answers a lot of questions. It is loaded with facts and hard to put down at times. This is a good book for everyone to understand the sacrifices service people often make, but it is especially helpful for family members of Wake Island personnel who want to know more about what happened.
A well written book about a very hard subject. The vivid descriptions of the every day events that these young men went through are very revealing. The different methods used by the Japenese to breakdown our young men will and how it was defeated should be read by all young Americans.
Great read.
I bought this because my uncle Frank is a Wake Island defender.
This book is an excellent follow up to "Given UP of Dead",the story about the Wake Island defenders. This is a tremendousstory, not only about the horrors of war,but about human will and spirit.
