My husband and I are avid travelers, having been to Europe over 25 times, and many other places in the world as well. I always buy the DK books as I’ve loved the bright photo format, with detailed blowouts of major sites, and great walks, with enough description to get me excited. I have over 30 of their books. And I buy Rick Steves for the wordsy format with lots of great tips on skipping lines and good walks etc. The new 2019 DK version is a cheap facsimile, with half the pictures on thin matte paper with dull colors. They tried to expand the areas to visit, which I can appreciate, but with 10 days in Paris, we’re hitting our favorite areas. This guide might be better for someone who lives in Paris and wants to visit the outer arrondissements. Sorry DK, your attempt here missed the mark. I’m grabbing the 2018 Paris version before they’re gone.
Quality photos on matte pages.Improved a lot since the 2005 version with its glossy pages that smudged when I highlighted them.This book is informative (to newbie travelers like myself), and looks great at the same time.Oragnized by neighborhood.Maps give a good visual. There is a paris metro map included in the back flap of the book, which I appreciate.
Small spaces. Poor coloring. There is a small disappointing flatness on every page.I used to love this guide. My husband and I bought it almost every year. This edition is terrible, dull, and mediocre.What have you done to us?
I have a good many other DK guides to Europe and elsewhere, which I enjoy greatly. However, this version of your Paris material is uninspiring and poorly done. The photos are lacking in clarity and the copy is flat. There isn't enough of it to engage the reader. Plus, you reduced the number of pages, which means you cut out a lot of interesting material. For me this is too great a departure from your previous works for me to recommend to anyone. Buy an earlier edition if any are available. Just disappointing. I'd return it, but I've already pulled off the map!
I love the DK Eyewitness travel books and this one didn't disappoint. It's chockful of helpful information for planning a trip to Paris and will be great to have on the trip.
The new 2019 Paris guide was a big disappointment!!I have many DK travel guides. Now these guides will be like all the others:(
Perfect book for my next trip to Paris
I have been buying DK Eyewitness travel books for several years. As a bit of a history and culture nerd, I really enjoy the many details about the places I am visiting in the DK Eyewitness books. I especially enjoy the pages that are more in-depth on a specific site/monument so I can learn more about specific details.I purchased this 2019 version of the Paris book for an upcoming trip to Paris and was disappointed to see that the format I have enjoyed for so many years had changed. Not only had the format changed, but the feel of the book was different (and in fact several pages in my book are still joined, the pages would need to be cut to be read). I ended up purchasing the 2018 version and have been able to compare the two. Here are the pros and cons of the new 2019 versions in my opinion.Pros:-There are more areas of Paris represented in the 2019 version, more of the neighborhoods that have less of the famous sites. For someone who has been to Paris several times this could be a nice addition to see new things in Paris.-I like that restaurants are now included in the neighborhood's section instead of as a list at the end of the book (the list is still there too). But its nice to see the suggested restaurants and hotels right along side the sites.-If you enjoy more instagram like photos of the sites of Paris, this book's images fit that style (and this is something DK Eyewitness touts as a new addition to their books for 2019, its not just my opinion). There is even a section now for people looking to take the best instagram worthy photos.Cons-If you enjoy the the in-depth bisections of different sites like in past editions of DK eyewitness books, this book has less of that. I compared the Notre Dame Cathedral sections from 2018 and 2019 editions and the 2018 edition has two pages about the cathedral while the 2019 is only one and doesn't have the information about the interior to the same extent 2018 does.-The areas in the beginning of the book about history and culture are not as expansive as in past editions. For some this may not be a problem, but for me it is.-In some neighborhoods a couple sites are missing from the 2019 edition that are in the 2018 edition. They're small of course, but still something I find troubling.I purchase these DK Eyewitness books for the history, insight and culture they show in the city, and for me some of that is lost in this 2019 edition. I'm glad I purchased the 2018 edition instead, and I'll be returning the 2019 edition.
