Read this. You will love every word. There was nothing phony out contrived in this novel. The whole book resonates truth. I didn’t feel the Christian aspect was really portrayed strongly it was a “clean” book. I loved the story line and history about the region. Adoption, pregnancy, snobbery, poverty —

I like this the best of the books I've read so far by Laurie Alice Eakes. This was #10. She broke from her usual "formula" in laying out the story with a character who is strong from the start and not beset with problems ... those come along as the story develops. I do wish there was more in all the Midwife books about the actual deliveries of the babies, in addition to the prenatal exams. What I like best about the books are the good stories about good people, without all the recreational sex thrown in!

I did not expect to be swept away, but I was, no spoilers here! Character development was excellent, plot was great, medical facts were accurate. I have been to similar regions, (Appalachian Mountains), and the scenery and environmental conditions as well the economical variety, and challenges are accurately portrayed. I am a health care professional, not a midwife, but these parts of the story are also accurate. But oh my, she can write!!!!! I did not want this book to end, I read it so fast, I will have to re-read, ( with joy), in hopes of a sequel!!

This book started out with an interesting plot line, and I thought I was in for a very enjoyable journey through Appalachia and the history and continued profession of midwifery. Somehow, it just went off the rails about 3/4 of the way through, and I realized when I reached the 95% mark of my kindle book that there was no way all of the loose threads were going to be tied up successfully in such a short time. And I was right. It just seemed to suddenly jolt to an end with nothing really satisfactorily resolved. Why stop writing after over 300 pages, and not really finish the story? Is there a sequel that finishes the plot? I was disappointed after having invested time and money in this book. It would have been better, if the ending had been better. Just my opinion.

Very well written love story that focuses on dedication, career, family, friendship, and roots. There isn't much about life that isn't addressed in this story. The author manages to hold readers interest in all this without sensationalism, hardcore (or any type) sex scenes, or over the top violence. This book is subtly Christian based romance. I didn't agree with the moral stances of the characters at all times but I appreciated the consistency. The book is professionally written. It was obviously well edited and easy reading. The major focus is on midwife nursing which I found to be a fascinating topic. I came away from reading this book feeling entertained, inspired, and gently educated by a light, easy, well written story.

A story from the Appalachian. Laura Alice Eakes writes a fast-paced tale of a mountain midwife, who yearns to be a doctor, yearns to be in a relationship, yearns to have her own children. The tale is interlaced with social disparity and prejudice between backcountry people and upper crust echelon. The background story is full of surprises which makes for a quick read. I enjoied reading the book and have a better insight into the life of a midwife, a profession not so common as it used to be.

Despite what the book blurb says, this book is basically about a 30-something Christian virgin midwife having a love affair with her Tahoe. Her car is probably the most significant thing mentioned throughout this entire book. It got to a point where I would start a new page and ask myself "Lets see how many time she mentions her Tahoe on this page...".I'll admit to being on 57% in and on the verge of giving up. So far nothing has happened of even the remotest interest. Is this book meant to be a romance? There is a new boy in town (nerdy glasses with piercing blue eyes is the CONSTANT description) but so far nothing has happened beyond them having dinner and her holding his freezing hands when he went to get help once in the rain. I now suspect that NOTHING is going to happen until right at the end when they will go riding off into the sunset. If they even manage a chaste, tongueless kiss, I will be flabergasted. This book clearly belongs in the Christian category. Aside from all the God references, there is a point in the book where the potential lover (the boy, not the Tahoe) watches her on the floor and realises she is praying. Christian books should come with a warning so people who are not interested aren't sucked into spending money. And the feel of this book is decidedely 1950s. Perhaps even Victorian. If it wasn't for the constant references to the virgin midwives clothes (jeans, hooded sweathshirt), there is no way you would pick this as being set in 2018. Cause no-one can be this naive except in an author imagination? But the thing that bugs me the most about this book is the (mis)representation of the midwife industry. Nobody in this day and age still thinks as midwives as a backwater, backwards, poor persons alternative to birth. Yet this is how the author potrays here. With the rise in home births, doulas, birth suites in hospitals, this author writes about midwives as if they are some rare and mysterious profession that no-one else can understand - apparently not even a switched on, intelligent, city boy like "piercing blue eyes" believes that midwives still exist. I appreciate she must have done some research on the history of midwives when it was a role handed down from generation to generation, mother to daughter (and that would have been a great story) but the author seems to have no idea how the profession works now. The book does an absolute disservice to the profession.

Good read but last chapter sucked. It was as if the author had a set number of committed pages and had to hurry up and finish it. She gave details all the way through the book, then the last chapter had no details. Even though I figured Ashley would give up med school, it would have been fun to see her and Hunter grow together for six months, get Heather trained and see if her hubby comes back or she and Jason get together, and then they go off to DC together, eventually come back to the mountains. Another 300 pages or book 2, but then so what?
