A must read for YA and fantasy lover!

This book was part of the January 2019 Scribbler box. I didn't know anything about it in advance, and some of it annoyed me in the delivery. In no way do I think this was a bad book. It just wasn't a spectacular book, and I expect to be wowed if the curated books are supposed to examples of the best modern authors are doing. To the book itself, we start with a group of level 12 apprentices who are about to show their young Empress a recreation of the battle she had with her twin brother to earn control of the kingdom. It is a clever way to give us backstory and establish personal relationships with the 4 main apprentices whose motto is "Work hard; mischief harder."A lot of this is Japanese inspired without being Japanese. I was bored of this element, which might have been another case of "this book isn't for you." The Dragon Prince's magical warriors were called Ryuu. A bar Spirt and Wolf visited was an Iz. All shallow Japanese references. My favorite character was probably Daemon, so his character reveal near the end was very cool. I also enjoyed that he shifted out of his pining for Sorah and realized the value of someone else who was in his inner circle. I hope that relationship lasts, but I doubt the author will do that. It somewhat defies convention. There are some great writing setups and planning in this story. We get the fairy tale that explains Daemon long before we as readers learn that about him. Fairy's brave act has the seeds of it planted long before she decides to do it. Broomstick is given moments where he can shine with political strategy. In the entire thing, there is an examination of pair bonds, whether twins, sisters, or the magical gemina pairings of Spirit/Wolf and Fairy/Broomstick.Decent fantasy in the end. I may not continue the series, but that doesn't mean other readers won't enjoy it.

This book really surprised me. I knew it sounded good, but I'm shocked at how much I loved it. The pacing was great and I read it way faster than most fantasies. The characters were what stood out most. Sora (spirit) had so much strength. She never gave up and wanted to be the best person she could be. Her gemina, Daemon (Wolf) was so supportive of Sora. His strength was fighting, but he wasn't very good at magic. Daemon didn't know who his family was and he definitely made Sora and the others family. Fairy was my favorite. She's Sora's roommate and is good with poisons/potions. Broomstick is Fairy's gemina and he was good with fire. This friendship was so strong and I adored each of them."Work hard. Mischief Harder."The Taigas are warriors that use magic and fighting to protect the Empress and the Imperial City. Ten years ago, The Empress Aki had to fight and kill her twin brother, Prince Gin. He let power get to his head and would have destroyed everything. However, Prince Gin isn't really dead. He has been teaching others a new type of magic and creating Ryuus. They can see particles in the air and manipulate them for their magic. It makes them more deadly than the taiga. Prince Gin can also hypnotize others to do his will. He is planning on killing his sister and taking over the palace. The old ways won't stop the ryuu and Prince Gin. Sora and Daemon decide that they need to do something, even if it gets them killed. They decide to follow Prince Gin and sneak onto his boat. Things don't go well and Sora is under the prince's spell. But for some reason, it doesn't affect Daemon. He's able to get word back to the Empress, but they are unprepared for how bad this battle will be.The book has myths and wonderful storytelling. I enjoyed the writing and the fast pace. There is a focus on friendship and family along with all the fighting and magic. I cannot wait for book two.I gave this book 5 stars. I won an arc from Evelyn and I can't thank her enough for my beautiful personalized copy (with letter and swag).  I also have a finished copy ordered and can't wait to get it. This cover is gorgeous!

A high fantasy that involves gods and an empire divided, with magical warriors fighting to serve the one they are sworn to, Circle of Shadows has an interesting magical system for its world-building, but the plot is quite predictable. This book had caught my eye because, well, magical ninjas. However, it does not really have much of Japanese culture in it beyond the warriors, some names, and the clothing is ambiguously Asian? The main characters, Sora and Daemon, are the top warriors in their graduating class, in an Academy where kids are trained to be the Empress' sworn warriors as well as the central law enforcement. They are young, and thus not entirely believed when they come back with a report (from their first mission) of the rise of a supposedly dead prince, who had caused a massacre a decade ago, and may be rising to challenge his sister, the Empress again.Armed with new magic, the Dragon Prince Gin is recruiting warriors to his cause via mind control. The native magic of the warriors is to use mudras to get animalistic abilites like enhanced sight, speed and strength, but the new ryuu magic is much more versatile and expansive. Sora and Daemon first have to spy, then fight him with the help of whatever warriors are left untouched by the mind control, which has them at a disadvantage as ryuu magic is more powerful. Coupled with that, Sora has a personal stake in the matter as Gin was the cause of the nursery fire in which she lost her sister. Daemon, meanwhile has a mysterious past that gets hinted at the end of the book. The magic of the book is its strong point, as it is explored in different aspects. The plotline, however, is predictable, with most twists clued in quite a while ago. Still, it benefits from engaging writing and a good pace, so you are enjoying the story nevertheless. The antagonist could be developed better, in my opinion, because right now he is just Generic Bad Royal #23.
