If you are thinking of getting back into backpacking, or have never tried it, this book will give you a great idea of what to expect. There is no sugar coating and pretty much tells it like it will be, whether you can see or not. If should give you the motivation to try a three or four day hike, or let you know this sport is not for you. A great motivational book for those who have physical or mental challenges.
Blind Courage is an amazing story of Bill Irwin and his dog, Orient, and their journey along the AT in 1990. I knew I'd love the book when I saw that there was Orient's pawprint on the first page. Orient was one cool dog. This is not your typical AT book. You will not read about major sections of the trail. I must admit, that was a bit disappointing. For example, Great Smokey Mountains National Park doesn't allow dogs on trails. At a time when Bill often had to stand up for his legal right to have a service dog with him in any public place, I was left wondering if this was a problem. On the other hand, there may not have been a ban on dogs on trails in the park at that time. You WILL learn what it is like to hike the trail blind, relying on God, your guide dog, and the help of other amazing people. Bill does a great job telling us the back story of his life before his blindness and his life before his conversion to Christianity. This is story of courage, humility, gratitude, and persistence. Overall, a really good book.Well done, Bill! Well done, Orient!
I started this book yesterday and finished it today. I could not put the book down and did not even notice the editing errors others seem to have found off-putting. I fell in love with Orient and found a lot of symbolism in his love and obedience in spite of hardships. Of course, I can say the same about Bill. I gave this book 5 stars for the content and for the spiritual uplift it gives. Even though it was written long ago, it is still a good read.
I've read this many times, but never bought a copy for myself. It's a great story, and I was fortunate enough to meet Bill and Orient on the trail outside of Roanoke Virginia when he was making his through-hike. I'll never forget them, nor will I ever forget what they taught a teenage-me: You can do anything you set your mind to.Bill was a great guy, and I am honored to have been able to hike with him, even if only for a short while.
If you have hiked even a few miles of the AT you will be amazed that a blind man could hike all 2000+ miles from Georgia to MaineIt is no “footpath†as some call it but in many places a rock scramble or walk along a knife edge ridgeMany sighted people could not make the 1000 foot climb out of the Lehigh Gorge -as just one example
I think it is a well written book. I didn't expect so much reference to God & religion, but that is his story & how he decided to tell it.Main part of the Book is Background, Prep, Southern A.T., PA., Maine. With many good mini-stories of how he went about things - the help & encouragement that he received from people. it occasionally jumps around (meaning where he is on the trail), but it isn't hard to follow & I found it an interesting book to read.As an rare hiker of small sections of the A.T., I didn't find any pointers or tips of hiking/packing, but there are plenty of books on that, this is more of his story of a Long Walk.
I was pleasantly surprised in two ways. First, I didn't realize Bill Irwin was such an extraordinary man of faith. Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a signed copy.My family is very much enjoying this true story about Bill Irwin's thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, with his faithful service dog Orient. This isn't "just" a story about what it is like to hike for six months without the use of one's eyes. Rather, this is inspiring in how his life does NOT center around the fact that he cannot use his eyes; he has risen above the experiential and temporal. You get insights into his soul through his humble & transparent testimony-about his life+his hike. This is the story of a blessed & grateful man. Remarkable.
This book was recommended to me by a friend in Germany I ordered a copy written in English and I could not put it down!
