First if the main character Tinsey was real or if I lived in her magical world, I'm certain we would be friends. In Tinsey's world, her people just don't interact with anyone outside their community. Well, she sees differently and is so eager to explore her world. When she finally does, adventure ensues. I loved the message behind this book. To be willing to meet and get to know others outside of our familiar kind. That is such an important lesson because we can often unintentionally or intentionally teach prejudice to children. How often do we teach openness and talking with someone who lives different, talks different and looks different? Well this book speaks directly to that and I loved it. It's an adorable world with fun language and imagery. A great read!
This middle grade book is an adorable tale featuring a kind and plucky lead named Tinsey Clover. An elf the size of a chipmunk, Tinsey feels isolated in her community, keenly aware of not fitting in with the other elves. After developing an unusual (and funny) magical power, Tinsey decides to set off on an adventure, hoping to find a community that really feels like home. Her adventure leads her to meet many interesting and sweet magical folks, including the charming troll Judder (one of my favourite characters). Her travels cause her to realise that the world is a very different place than she once thought it to be. While this novel is a breeze to read, it’s also clearly thoughtfully constructed as the author has threaded surprising reveals throughout the plot to keep readers consistently engaged. Flagg writes in a fun, easy to read style and this story would be particularly well-suited for reading aloud to young readers. Such readers are sure to enjoy the many enchantingly cute creatures featured in Tinsey Clover.
Tinsey Clover turns out to be more than just an elf the size of a chipmunk. She’s spunky, brave, loyal and very wise for her age. There are so many important lessons in this book and not just for children. Chelsea Flagg’s characters are believable, kind, cooperative and willing to see the big picture. This book goes beyond teaching inclusivity, courageousness, and what it means to be willing to go beyond one’s limits. It’s a great lesson in forgiveness; that just because you don’t agree with someone or approve of their actions, family is still family (singular or tribal) and deserving of help. For Flagg’s debut children’s novel, I give her an A+ for story line, charming and well-developed characters, snappy dialogue, and scenes that pull the reader right into the story. I bought this book for my granddaughters, 5 and 9, but I’ve decided to keep this for myself and get them another! Looking forward to the next Tinsey Clover adventure!
Tinsey Clover is a little treaflur who doesn't quite fit in, desperately searching for purpose and meaning in a sheltered world that doesn't encourage individuality, and who through her own unique gifts and perseverance sets the stage for incredible growth and discovery for many. While this coming of age story is undoubtedly uplifting and inspiring, the writing style and dialogue of the story need some improvement, which with time I'm sure Flagg will continue to develop. Certainly just the start of Tinsey's story, young readers will surely have much to look forward to as she and Flagg grow and mature.
It can be hard to package the magical realism and world-building traits of the fantasy genre into a children’s-sized book, but Young Adult author Chelsea Walker Flagg Has attempted to do just that with her coming-of-age novel, Tinsey Clover. The writing style of the book is well-suited to the story, in the sense that it’s like having an inside view of the main characters thoughts, and hearing the particular speech patterns that are unique to her age group.I’m not so familiar with this particular genre, but at times I did wonder if the language straight into the category of too much complexity for younger readers. At the same time I think there might be something good about that, since it can help kids increase their vocabulary and language skills.Overall I say this is a cute read for adults and a typically age-appropriate narrative for preteens.
Teaching children and young adults this concept of being willing to discover people who may not look like us or think like us is no more important than in today's world. Tinsey is a trealfur elf living in the village of Snugglepunk. She has been trapped inside her village her whole life. After deciding it is time to step out and explore the world beyond Snugglepunk, she is met with great opposition from her family and town members.I love that Tinsey does not listen to others. She is a trailblazer. Her fantastic journey teaches her and her family about acceptance and love. Tinsey discovers that just because something is different doesn't make it wrong. This is a story I highly recommend for young readers.
